The last days of social media - and why small communities are the future

The article "The Last Days of Social Media" by Noema describes a development that many of us have been feeling for some time: the big social networks have passed their zenith. What once began as a promise - to connect people with each other - has now become a noisy, crowded and often toxic environment for many.

Daniel Barreto

"Social media as we know it is dying, but we're not condemned to its ruins. We are capable of building better - smaller, slower, more intentional, more accountable - spaces for digital interaction, spaces where the metrics that matter aren't engagement and growth but understanding and connection, where algorithms serve the community rather than strip-mining it."

From open networks to closed rooms

For a long time, the idea was that a single large network would unite all people and interests. But this is exactly what led to problems: Attention became the currency, algorithms decided on visibility, and personal relationships were lost in the noise.

More and more people are therefore withdrawing from the large platforms. They are looking for smaller, more manageable spaces in which communication can once again be personal and trusting. The article describes this as follows: "The future of the internet does not lie in an all-encompassing network, but in many smaller communities that are more closed, more specific and more human."

What this means for organizations

For companies, organizations and initiatives, this change represents an opportunity - but also a necessity. Anyone still trying to reach their community exclusively via large social media platforms runs the risk of being lost in the crowd or remaining dependent on the rules of third parties.

The way forward is to create your own digital spaces: places that are independent, strengthen the brand and, above all, deepen relationships with the community.

Our attitude at coapp

This is exactly where we come in with coapp. We believe that community is the new foundation for successful organizations - whether in business, in associations or in cities. That's why we have developed a platform that makes it easy to build, run and design your own community - under your own brand, independent of the big platforms and with all the tools for interaction, collaboration and monetization.

We share the analysis from the article: The era of large, open networks is coming to an end. The future belongs to smaller, more valuable communities. And we are convinced that anyone who starts to build such a community now will benefit from it in the long term.
